I hate writing “about me” pages.
They all feel so awkward.
How do I sum up my identity in 400-600 words so that you feel like you know me?
In this age of Facebook and Twitter, we post 140 character updates about our lives which suddenly sound significant. Did anyone used to care that I made a great broccoli salad last night? Suddenly it has meaning, it sounds important. You can thumbs up my vegetable choice.
I have made great friends starting from online relationships, including the dear women that I work with in GoodDayMompreneur.
But a relationship takes time to build and develop and just like in the offline world, you don’t know me in 500 words.
Yes, I could tell you about wild adventures I had in India when I was young, climbing mountains in the Himalayans and listening to gurus next to the Ganges (but didn’t everyone have wild times?) I could tell you about all the alternative health & parenting fads I’ve implemented and it would be a full checklist from Mothering Magazine. I could tell you about the spiritual masters I studied with and the time I took the kids (both under the age of 5) on a cross country train trip to a spiritual community in Vermont and then camped for 2 months in a tent.
I could list for you the passion I feel about earning money from home, how I have struggled to figure out this internet thing and finally have it working for me. Building an internet business has allowed me to continue homeschooling and has helped me be a single mom who can still be available for her kids when they need her.
We all have stories that sound exotic and interesting when we flounce them out in 500 words.
But the real truth about me is that I’m a woman struggling to be there for the people she loves. I find beauty in the baby doves that just fledged from the nest on my front porch. I found a great bottle of wine that reminds me of France and even though I finished the wine weeks ago, the memory of tasting the world across the ocean still brings a smile to my heart.
I stumble and fall and I am always shocked by how really clumsy I can be at life. I am capable of such love, and ecstasy, grief and rage that I think I could crack in two with the force of it. I’m tender and fierce. I’m aware and clueless. I am all contrasts and inconsistencies.
And in the middle of all of it, I search to know who I am in 500 words.
I am happy to “meet” you in this online way–and look forward to hearing your 500 words.
The internet can bring women together like never before. My heartfelt wish is that GoodDayMompreneur can be part of your 500 word story too.
Julia
